Stars:

4/5 stars

Synopsis:

12 year-old Esperanza was living a luxurious life, abundant with servants and chefs and anything she desired. That was until her father was killed. Suddenly, everything that she ever had is property of her uncles, including her mother, who's got another plan in mind: escape to America. However, life in the free land is a sharp contrast from the life Esperanza left behind. Her ranch is now a cramped cabin in a migrant workers' camp, and she's having trouble adjusting, but bit by bit, Esperanza is also learning. Learning how to cook plum pudding, learning how to work in the fields and learning how to maybe, rise above it all.

Thoughts:

Pam Muñoz Ryan doesn't disappoint (yet again) with a well-developed plot and a character who has a major personality haul, that didn't seem forced at all. The theme of the novel is excellent for the young audience its meant for and just anyone who needs to learn the importance of determination.

Recommendations:

Readers who enjoy(ed):

- other books by Pam Muñoz Ryan

- reading children's books from time to time

- protagonists that go from spoiled brats to humble do-gooders
